The beginning

My lifelong obsession and love of cycling started at the early age of six. Over the forty years since then, I have cycled close to a quarter of a million miles. Undeterred by an early childhood diagnosis of Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis (Still’s Disease), I persevered with my passion.

Due to the illness, I could walk only with the aid of crutches but luckily I could cycle pain free.

Cycling became my freedom. It gave me the ability to move.

At the age of fourteen, I underwent revolutionary medical treatment which successfully cured me of the disease.  I continued cycling on a daily basis to school and to work.

Racing Success

When I was eighteen, I joined the Bray Wheeler’s Cycling Team.  I began racing with them, and with some excellent coaching I won many professional and amateur races in Europe, the Caribbean, and the United States. To this day, one of my favorite things to do when I return home to Ireland is to ride the roads of Wicklow with my old teammates.

Olympic hopes dashed

I was shortlisted to participate in the 1992 Olympics, but this came to a crashing halt when I was hit head on by a car in early 1991.  The accident caused severe trauma to my back such that it would not be able to endure the rigors of hard training and racing that would have been necessary to attend the Olympics.

While racing in Europe, I was sponsored by an American cycling company.  They offered me a position in Washington State as their Technical Director.  I accepted the position in September 1991, and moved to the United States.  Since then, my involvement in the bike industry has included many different roles.

Dream becomes reality

I ultimately took the next step in my love affair with cycling and started my own custom bicycle company.
